Must have been a temporary problem with the server the widget is hosted on, because I just tested it and it's working fine for me, but thanks for letting me know.

That's great. All my past memory about this game just comes right back. Does it have a bigger screen version? It's kind of small.

@Rianor
Good suggestions. I think I'll likely go for Resistance 2, mainly because I can always fall back on Call of Duty 4 and SOCOM for online matches and it's been a really long time since I played Resistance: Fall Of Man, so I'm looking forward to revisiting the franchise. That way I have Call of Duty 5 to keep me occupied early next year until KillZone 2 comes out. ;)

Personally and from knowing your gaming taste and our collective gaming tastes, i would go for Resistance 2 or Cod5.

Mainly just for the fact that both will most certainly have a very strong online expierence, and just like how RB6V and COD4 did, it has brought us countless nights of fun, of us playing each of those games online night after night enjoying the hell out of them, and i think both Resistance 2 and COD5 will do the same that RB6V and COD4 did.

AT&T "Unlimited Data" is actually 5GB per month, if you read the fine print.

It's impossible to go over 6GB unless you're on YouTube 24/7. I've drained the battery watching YouTube for the past 3 days and I've used about 80MB worth of data.

That's strange. I don't have that problem and I have no idea what may be causing that for you. The "moveTo(0,0)" specifies that the window should be pinned to the very top left edge of the screen. Maybe play around with negative values like moveTo(-4,0)?

Thanks, this is great! I still have a small issue with it on my Macbook, though: when trying to fill the screen, the window is still positioned 4 pixels in from the left edge of the screen. Can't get it to budge unless I pick it up and drag it over.

Even if I specify a window size of 1280x800, I still get 1276x800, fitted to the right edge but not the left. Any ideas?

Same here! Same problem!! Found happiness with Teksavvy, my contract with Sympatico expired on time!

Unlimited speed is becoming too expensive with Sympatico!

When Bell started their new pricing scheme, you had to pay extra maximum fee of $30 to get unlimited quota.

Too many disadvantages!

Contract , everything ISP should allow no-contract and free to cancel if you do not like their service.

Throttling bittorrent as reason of load balancing BS

Price

No wonder everyone try to get rid of Sympatico ISP when they can and some count their days for their contract to expire so they can switch to other ISP. It was a big mistake I did but never again going back!

The step 2 is coming in as a2e.sit but then it opens in TextEditor and I don't get the ROM file that step 6 calls for. Therefore I get "AppleSoft Not Available" and don't see the game. Any ideas? Is this Stuffit related?

An easier way to resolve the ARD remote refresh issue is to kill the AppleVNCServer process on the remote machine. The process will automatically relaunch.

SSH in and run "top" or "ps -ax | grep AppleVNCServer" to discover the process ID and then run the kill command.

This way you don't have to remember the full path to the ARDAgent app.

I recently switched from Bell to Teksavvy. I was on a 512k plan with Bell and when I wanted to upgrade they told me faster service wasn't available in my area. So I called TekSavvy and signed up for the 'up to 5MB' service without any problem. Makes no sense at all I know.

Now I've been with TekSavvy for a month and it is great. Today I got a bill from Bell for $100 early cancellation fee. I phoned them and tried to get it waived since I sure as hell don't remember signing up on a contract and had been a customer for 3+ years at that address. They wouldn't budge.

So today I switched my local phone and LD service to TekSavvy and cancelled Bell ExpressVu and signed up with StarChoice. If only TekSavvy offered television I would have signed up for them as well.

My personal fav:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background &

puts the screen-saver on the desktop until you close the terminal window.

and if your "open with" command ever gets cluttered up with a bunch of old software you don't use anymore try:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

finally everyone who doesn't leave their computer on all night should run the following every month or so.

sudo periodic daily weekly monthly

Try leaving your WAP settings blank, it should work, but I really don't think it makes a difference if you have it entered or not, you should be covered by your plan either way. But I suggest you don't take my word for it, or anyone else's except Rogers. Give them a call and ask them to confirm for you what the correct settings are and whether it makes a difference for billing purposes.

@Shleppinstein

Good questions. Yes, the web is the normal way you would submit posts to most blogs. The advantage of using this app over Safari (on the iPhone) include:

1. More efficient use of bandwidth since you're not having to continually reload a web page.
2. You can work on your post even when you don't have access to the internet and submit it when you do, since you can save drafts locally on the iPhone.
3. Faster, more efficient, because it's a local app with an iPhone optimized interface rather than a web page that has an interface that's optimized for computer screens. Again, no waiting for a web page to load every time you access a different page or hit save.

If have access to an internet connected computer, you're always going to be better off using it rather than any mobile device for the obvious keyboard/display advantage.

@JoJo
You are mistaken. I can confirm that both the unlocked original iPhone and a Rogers bought iPhone 3G works on any standard WiFi network that you have access/permission to. Not sure where you got this misconception. Obviously you can't use a WiFi network that is protected with a password if you don't know the password.

I understand that the Rogers Iphone Wifi works ONLY on Rogers or Fido hotspots, and will NOT work in a private wifi environment.

Anybody know about this?

It seems that the iPhones are currently available for the non-subsidised price, however the July 24th date is because of the introduction of non-3 year agreements (and thus, corresponding iPhone pricing). So, I would assume as Fido have done in the past, that there would be a 2-year and 1-year agreement available with respective plans. I am also guessing that there will be another plan or plans offerred for the iPhone

I would like all iPhones to have some sort of unlimited plan, too. However for obvious legal reasons Rogers can not call their 6GB plan "unlimited", even though for most of us, it is like an unlimited plan as we'll never even come close to using 6GB in a month.

I also agree about all plans including voicemail and call display. It's just another way for Rogers to squeeze an extra $7 or so (depending on whether you sign up for a value pack or not). This is because much of the iPhone's phone component will be useless without it, and who doesn't use either, or both features nowadays!?!

To me, that's like Rogers charging a per use fee for activating your bluetooth headset. When an BT device is activated, a signal is sent back to Rogers to add 25c or whatever.

But of course, you'll be able to add the unlimited bluetooth option to your existing plan for only $10/month.

What I meant by ideology was if you valued not signing a contract purely for not signing a contract's sake, despite the fact that it won't save you any money and will likely end up costing you more.

Thanks for the info. I assume you mean that you'll be able to buy an iPhone without contract at the non-subsidized price (probably around $630/$730). I do suspect the price plans will change, given that probably very few people were dumb enough to sign up for one of the original iPhone voice/data plans. Personally, I think they should just give all their iPhone plans 6GB (or call it unlimited) and differentiate them with the number of included minutes/SMS messages. Every plan should include visual voicemail and call display.

Then this even further reduces Ghose's credibility of his multi-year estimate! I mean, to generalise on all carriers / potential companies world wide.

When talking about saving money and / or getting the best bang for our back, the idea in itself is always ideological - our goal is always to obtain the best situation without compromise. The compromise only arises if unknown factors remove us from our goal.

In any case, I came back here to post the fact that Rogers have mentioned that their iPhone plans and 3-year contract requirement will be changing on July 24th, this year.

I actually called in to verify my Fido dollar amount and see how much the net cost of a non-subsidised phone would be. The rep suggested I wait until the 24th unless I'm just going to sign up for 3 years.

My displeasure at 3-year contracts and their associated cancellation penalties, along with the lack of optional GSM carriers was the reason that this discussion started.

So, we'll see what changes. Either way the $30 for 6Gb is still available until August 31st, so I won't be putting that option at risk.
:-)

Actually, the first article I linked to was talking about one of the largest mobile network operators in the world, so no, I don't believe Ghose or myself are thinking only about North America. From the first article I linked to:
<blockquote> Weather Investments, controlled by Egypt's Naguib Sawiris, and Novator, founded by Iceland's Bjorgolfur Thor Bjorgolfsson.

Through Weather and its holdings in a firm called Orascom, Mr. Sawiris rules a wireless empire with more than 90 million clients in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe. His customers are based in such diverse markets at Italy and North Korea. In a recent interview with The Globe and Mail, he said he was attracted to the Canadian market by a dearth of competition.
...
With a total of 94 million subscribers around the world, Weather/Orascom "enjoys a level of scale that cannot be matched by any of Canada's wireless incumbents," Mr. Ghose said.</blockquote>

I actually don't think it's likely any buyout or new operator will come from NA but think it's much more likely that an international operator would be involved. I still don't see anything happening in much under 2 years for the reasons I mentioned.

All of this is of course academic, since it still begs the question of why you'd spend $400 more now on the off chance that <em>maybe</em> a competitor is suddenly going to appear out of nowhere, instead of saving the $400 now. If you get an iPhone on contract, best case scenario, you save $400, worst case scenario you break even. But with a non-contract iPhone, best case scenario, you break even, worst case scenario, you paid $400 more than you needed to and potentially have warranty issues. It seems rather obvious which makes more sense, except from an ideological standpoint.

One thing you're forgetting is the power of a mass buy out. OK, so we've been talking about the Spectrum Auction, but what if (to add to the other IF's in the articles you quoted) a large zaibatsu like Sumitomo come along and created their own infrastructure.

Actually, they don't even have to buy out Bell or Telus (but could in a heart beat). With their money, resources and power they would have no problem setting up a GSM network before Rogers would have time to react. They wouldn't even have to sub-contract out any work, and have enough subsidiaries covering everything from electronics to construction, to steel and chemicals.

Sumitomo also own and have full control of their own finance and insurance companies, so forget about delays in red tape and related resourcing. This is a true powerhouse that could easily come and change things in well under a year. They've also been around since the 17th century and won't be going anywhere, anytime soon.

Your assumptions are based on companies and money within North America. Asia has been a contender (and dominant power) for decades in many industries and their cell phone products have a massive market share, so why not their services in an area that is undergoing massive change.

Your viewpoint and the articles that you quote seem to suffer from tunnel vision. This is the same tunnel vision that looks only at North America as a safe "island" and doesn't take into account other powers in this ever expanding global economy.

This type of viewpoint is what shocked the U.S. when it was shattered as their car industry took a hit from foreign cars and manufacturing methods. I am sure MANY analysts underestimated the power and impact of foreign markets entering the U.S. economy. I'll bet that many of the same analysts never even accounted for it, or simply dismissed the fact as inconceivable, but it happened.

ING didn't have to build a national cell network and Fido took many years to build out their network to a point where it was competitive, we have no idea how long it took them to get to market.

I don't think Ghose's estimate was only looking at infrastructure. I believe he was looking at all the logistics, contract negotiations for real estate and roaming, regulatory approvals etc. The auction isn't even officially over yet, nothing can even start until there's a clear winner.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the wireless spectrum being auctioned is <a href"http://www.teleclick.ca/2007/02/canadian-government-plans-wireless-spectrum-auction-for-early-2008/" rel="nofollow">all in the 2GHz range</a>. Canadian (and worldwide) GSM networks all operate at the <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GSM_frequency_ranges" rel="nofollow">1900MHz range and below</a>. So IF the GSM standard is expanded to include the new frequencies being auctioned (a very big if), then there's also the matter of compatible phones being developed and clearing all regulatory approvals.

I think our most likely source for GSM competition will come from an existing player (Bell or Telus), but that is likely even farther down the road since the technology that will allow them to economically migrate to GSM is <a href="http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/business/story.html?id=e5dcd860-6d69-443c-a326-2b591af5c038" rel="nofollow">still 4-5 years away</a rel="nofollow">, and according to that same article:
<blockquote> It would take Telus up to two years to build out GSM coverage in Canada's urban areas alone, he said, and even then it would not enjoy the monopolistic pricing and product clout that makes GSM a bonus for Rogers.</blockquote>
That's 2 years for an existing carrier who already has all the towers in place, just needs to install the infrastructure.

Industry Canada's blessing is a whole other issue, and in terms of Infrastructure development and (more importantly) deployment, I don't see how Ghose could make a 2 year estimate. There's no basis or rationale offerred. As I mentioned, we have no idea where the auction winner will be coming from.

Besides, if past experience is the main basis for such an estimate, look how quickly and stealthily ING came out of nowhere. Even Fido, back in the day...

I think Ghose's estimate is far more realistic. I just don't think a national cell network can be cost effectively built in 6 months, and who knows how long Industry Canada is going to drag their feet to give the auction winners the green light to start deploying.

More competition will come, but we're going to have to be a bit patient.

Well, I guess the Fido rep was seeing double and somwehow read $100 as $1100 of her 'cheat sheet'.

If it's $400 then that's a risk I may be willing to take, but I need an unlocked iPhone, given all the travelling I do (especially to the US) AND given that I already have invested in SIM cards from 3 major US cell providers.

So, I'll be waiting for an unlock method to be published. I figure that'll be in about a week or so.

I take the comments of industry analysts with a grain of salt. Mr / Ms. Ghose didn't take into account (and can't possibly) the size and / or power of the company who wins the auction.

OK, so extrapolate the biggest player in the US and MAYBE you can get a result, but what if the new contender is from Europe or China? Maybe another projection model or 2?

My point is that an aggressive company can do a LOT in 6 months, never mind 1 year of development when trying to break into a monoply type market when the monoply has a lot of disposable assets. Yes, Ted, I'm talking about you.

I mean, I'm pretty sure the contender will be operating in stealth mode or at least coming up with a twist which will have to take Rogers by surprise to succeed. THAT will be their business model, or Rogers/Fido will have time mitigate any loss of profits to Company X, thus hurting Company X.

Let's see what happens. For now, I'm just protecting what's mine...my hard earned moolah...

I think you were misinformed by the Fido rep, or the cancellation fee has changed. According to the <a href="http://www.fido.ca/web/content/monthly/important_information?lang=en" rel="nofollow">Fido website</a>, it's a maximum of $400, minimum $100, depending on how much time is left in your agreement:
<blockquote> An Early Cancellation Fee (ECF) applies to all subscribers with a Fido Agreement, if , for any reason, their service is terminated prior to the end of the Fido Agreement. The ECF is the greater of the (i) $100 or (ii) $20 per month remaining in the Fido Agreement, to a maximum of $400 (plus applicable taxes), and applies for each deactivated phone number.</blockquote>

We will be seeing some new carriers in Canada thanks to the <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080707.r-spectrum08/BNStory/Technology/home" rel="nofollow">wireless spectrum auction</a> but, according to that article:
<blockquote> The changes won't occur overnight. It will take about two years for the winners of the new licences to build infrastructure and operations. But the auction results are a watershed moment in Canadian communications, said Genuity Capital analyst Dvai Ghose.</blockquote>

Seems to me you'd be better off investing the $400. By the time a competing GSM provider could build-out a new GSM network in Canada (assuming they use GSM), you'd likely have less than a year left on your contract, so it would only cost you around $100-120 to cancel it, assuming you didn't decide to just stick with Fido, who will no doubt react to any new competitive threat that comes along with more competitive rates. Not to mention the potential warranty headaches in dealing with a grey market product.

I'd rather pay $650 for the phone, now than worry about a heavy fee, later.

Good question. I heard rumours that T-mobil and / or another unnamed carrier (with an actual network) is coming to Canada. It's one not to ignore, especially with advances in GSM technology and with Rogers / Fido receiving a lot of press lately - even in the US. (What?! You have cell phones in Canada?). So i'd rather NOT be locked in for 3 human years (which is like 9 years in a cell phone technology timeframe).

$400 makes sense to allow Rogers/Fido to recover their subsidy cost, but I called Fido and the cancellation fee I was quoted is $1100. F**K that.

The reason the iPod touch (and STOP calling it an iTouch, PEOPLE!) is $319 as compared to one with a phone, etc., is the marginal cost of bringing it to market. I mean, it's the same reason it's $500 to paint a single car door and $700 from the same place to paint your whole car...

OK, so It looks like I'll be getting the $650 unsubsidised, unlocked iPhone from a non-Rogers / Fido store. Pacific Mall, here I come!

@Blue Ninja

The 3-year contract is in exchange for a heavily subsidized phone. Rogers will sell you an unsubsidized iPhone with no contract if you wish. I think the price is going to be around $600-650, which sounds about right for a device with it's features and coincides with the estimates of how much Rogers pays Apple for the iPhone. After all, there has to be a reason the iPod touch starts at $319CDN, and doesn't include a phone, BlueTooth or GPS and costs you extra for software updates which are free on iPhone.

I think I heard somewhere that the early cancellation fee is something like $400, so in reality there's not much benefit to buying the iPhone without contract unless you're SURE you are going to switch carriers in the near future. Question is, who are you going to switch to?

Dammit. What's with all the 3-year contracts? I am not going to get locked in. I'd rather pay the premium for getting a non-subsidized iPhone than pay $1100 to Robbers...ahem...I mean, ROGERS (or Fido), for breaking their contract between now and 2011...

I know I've been with Fido for 5 years, and I think that should count for something as opposed to being forced to sign a freakin' contract. Hmmm...Unless, I play the "OK, I'm moving to Bell - convince me to stay" routine.

I'm likely gonna hold out for an unlocked phone - which may be more difficult as the policy apparenty is to have all iPhones activated before they leave the store. Either that or I'll wait until the hype dies and see what other offerings are out there.

The new 6GB for $30 is great. Not unlimited yet but a HUGE improvement. I personally will go for that coupled with an unlimited incoming plan and I will add call display (unbelievable that we have to pay for call display but what can you do?).

Rogers has done it again! No UNLIMITED Data plan for iPhone

Well Rogers has done it again, showing it's yellow monopolistic teeth! 2GB of Data per month with the $115 Package? This is highway robbery! Are these corporate bloodsuckers for real?

All this is stemming from he fact that there are no competition for Rogers in Canada! No other GSM Service Provider! I was planning to at least buy 3 iPhone 3Gs, but I changed my mind! No iPhone till Rogers stops this draconian pricing for their data plan! What is hard to understand is this: Why Rogers has such a problem with DATA? Why? At least can they stop issuing decrees and actually explain to their clients why they are so stingy with their data bandwidth? May be also explain to us why the majority of Service Providers selling iPhone can sell their phones with an unlimited data plan?

Only 2GB a Month? This is a disgrace and it shows what Rogers really thinks about their Canadian Customers! They truly think that we are stupid & ignorant and that we neither know - nor are we capable of learning anything! Well I have news for you, Rogers: WE ARE NOT! I am canceling my plans for purchasing 3 iPhone 3G, until they offer UNLIMITED Data Plan! I am sure that most people, after finding out what Rogers is really doing, will cancel their plans as well. So I guess it was all for nothing to wait a full year for the arrival of iPhone to Canada! :(

Knowing about Rogers underhanded decision not to offer UNLIMITED data plan, Apple should have NEVER given iPhone sells rights to Rogers in the first place! Unlimited Data has been the cornerstone of Apple's agreement for allowing a Service Provider to sell iPhone. Rogers held out for a full year, knowing that they have the monopoly on GSM market, and Apple gave up, which is very uncharacteristic of Apple. I guess Apple doesn't care about their it's Canadian Clients either!

@Shelppinstein
Depends on how you look at it. Compared to the U.S., it's definitely not as good a value, and the lack of an affordable consumer unlimited plan is a big disappointment. But compared to Rogers previous data plans, these iPhone plans are a MAJOR improvement, not only in the amount of data you get included, but also in the overage charges. Accidentally racking up a $1,000 data bill, which was easy to do if you weren't careful on the old plans is now next to impossible.

At least we're making progress. We're probably trailing the U.S. by about 2-3 years, which has always been the situation with telecommunications here in Canada, whether cell phone, long distance or mobile data.

A very helpful suggestion me2, and one that every Mac user should know. Sometimes however, we would like to avoid rebooting our Mac for various reasons like we're running a server, the system is busy with a task or we're just really anal about resetting our up-time! ;-)

It's not command line based, but if you have a troublesome CD/DVD the following also works:

Shutdown your computer.
Turn it back on and hold the mouse button all of the way through the boot processes.
The CD/DVD will auto-eject.

@slow
No, things you install via Installer.app will not re-lock your iPhone. Just be wary about what you install though, as that doesn't mean that you can't mess up your iPhone if you do something you shouldn't with one of the programs you install. If you want to play it safe, stick to installing simpler programs that don't hack/modify the built-in functionality of the iPhone. Games and useful programs should be safe though. I think the instruction sheet the seller included with your iPhone was referring to Firmware updates from Apple when saying not to update.

This page is great! Just received/purchased an unlocked iphone online (version 1.1.4) - the first thing i read as i opened the box was: "upgrading the software on your phone will relock it permanently. please do not upgrade the software as reunlock is not covered in warranty" - this topic (things that will bugger up ur phone, eg. firmware upgrades) has been covered rather well on this page...i'm still ??muddled?? about the fun looking items within the INSTALLER ICON & the updated installer version 3.11....(scared to tap on those icons)...should i assume installing any of these items falls under "upgrades" that might mess up my unlocked iphone? :-/ (newbie)

I am still unsure whether i will be upgrading or not.... the deciding factor will be: A) what the data prices are... and B) if they will allow me to add the new data plans to my existing iPhone...

I would rather not sign a 3 year contract with anyone right now since early in 2009 we should see a new national wireless provider enter the market as a result of the wireless spectrum auction currently underway, this could be a big motivator for rogers to lock up everyone into three years before we have a viable option for wireless service

another thing to consider is weather the speculated "unlimited" data for $30 is true, and if so will it limiit the unlimted portion of the deal to browsing and email, and shun all the cool 3rd party apps that will be available that will rely on a network connection...

only time will tell, but until then lets speculate some more....

@abe
I agree, especially if you're forced to sign a long term data contract. If like their existing policy, you only need to have a voice contract, then there's nothing stopping you from forgoing a data plan altogether and only use it with WiFi. At $199, if you're in the market for a new cell phone, it's still your best bet, even if you can't utilize all of it's features all of the time. Just as a phone/PDA/WiFi internet device, its still worth every penny in my opinion.

I will be the first one in line, depending on Rogers plans and pricing.
They have stated they are not fans of unlimited plans like AT&T had for the iphone; for me that is a deal breaker for the iPhone. Not that I would be using it 24/7 or even 8/5, but without that kind of plan the iphone is just an ipod (and as I already have an iPod touch...). The pricing of their plans will also make my mind up for me. If it's not equivalent to or better than AT&T's pricing that we've been reading about for a year, again it won't make it worth it to me.
As I said, I've been wanting/drooling for one for a year, but it all depends on what Rogers/fido does with the ball in their court. I want one but it's their decisions that will determine whether I will get one.

Forget about throttling on Peer to Peer applications, I can't even get Bell Symptatico to deliver the speed I contracted for. They downgraded my service without my consent and continue to bill me at the higher rate!

I have a connection of 440KBps while I pay for 2MBps. AFter 5 calls and a billing representative that tells her own tech services guy "Yes, he's paying for 2MBps" right on the phone with me...the problem is still not fixed. They forget, have "backlogs" technicians not there... you name it they have an excuse.

Mention you want to upgrade to a more expensive package and curiously, that can be done right away.

Bell is a company that just puts people on commission to sell as much as junk as they can, knowing that they can make it very difficult for the customer to cancel. It is unquestionably the most unscrupulous company of any kind I've dealt with. It is a true disgrace for Canada.

The poor techies they hire in India are there because the pathetic company is so poorly managed they can't find enough people to deal with their own complaints. These tech people at call centres are there primarily as sales agents. They can't fix anything because they have no control of the infrastructure. They just listen to clients and make promises about having problems fixed.

It is not unusual at all for Sympatico customers to be overcharged and the management does not see this as a problem. The management needs to do some jail time.

@DaNa
You might as well wait until July 11 when the iPhone 3G is launched in Canada before upgrading your plan. Rogers will no doubt bring out iPhone specific plans which may be better than what they have on offer right now, maybe even an affordable unlimited plan (fingers crossed). Your existing plan will continue to function as it did previously.

These are great posts. I have an unlocked iphone that works fine with my sim Card from my old phone (Rogers) but my plan is up and I wanted to upgrade it. Can anyone give me advice on a "data plan" that will work with my iPhone or should i wait till the plans for the Canadian iPhone comes out - realizing there is no guarantee they will work with my unlocked iPhone - so confusing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

@CanMan
Unfortunately, my file sharing traffic is now throttled just like it was on Bell, during peak hours, to a maximum of 30KB/s down speed. Everything else though is as fast as I should expect.

@Beandip
First off, make sure you are running Mac OS X 10.5.2. You most likely typed something incorrectly. Copy and paste the command rather than re-typing if possible. It's all one command that should be entered on a single line, including the 9C31 at the end, which has a space preceding it.

I seem to be having a problem with the first command; after typing the command and entering my password I receive the following message:

Rep argument is not a dictionary
Defaults have not been changed.

Am I doing something wrong? I've tried half a dozen times making sure to check my typing on each attempt and I can assure you I have typed exactly what you posted.

Thanks.

I am happy to report that I just took the plunge to upgrade my unlocked iPhone firmware from 1.0.2 to 1.1.4 using ziPhone 3.0 by zibri. The upgrade went without a hitch, and it proves that zibri's software does work very well indeed! I had always hesitated to do an upgrade since I was not sure whether any software would work on an unlocked iPhone with firmware as old as 1.0.2. But after reading many comments about zibri and his Ziphone, and the considerable no. of downloads since it was launched, I knew his software would work. Now, I am so happy being able to use so many bells and whistles that are so iPhone unique. What's more, it's free!!

Seeing this article and you talking about net neutrality I thought I'd let you know about the upcoming Net Neutrality rally in Ottawa (organized by TekSavvy). You can find out about it at http://www.netneutralityrally.ca , more media coverage is always better even if you can't make it yourself.

What fun. I used to play this endlessly on a IIC in the late 80s. I think I got up to level 110 or so. Still on 1 now but the moves are coming back. Does it work with a USB joystick? There might be one around here somewhere. The installation worked perfectly. Thank you.

There is a space between ProductBuildVersion and 9C31. If you just select the entire command and copy and paste, you'll see it's there. This is also the best way to avoid making any typos. ;-)

Thanks for providing the link to the original apple support discussions thread. I have one correction to the fix.

For the command in 2. you need to either give the full path to the file

sudo chmod 644 /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist

or cd to that directory /System/Library/CoreServices/ first. Might seem self evident but someone with no unix knowledge will not know this.

Thanks for this! I looked around for other people with this problem and everyone assumes you are a) either an idiot and don't know how to run an update or b) pirated the software. I have the exact same problem as you, but sadly my current install is quite unstable. Hopefully 10.5.3 will come out soon as I really don't want to do a clean install and then have to set up all my software, VMware, etc...all over again.

I looked around for other people with this problem and everyone assumes you are a) either an idiot and don’t know how to run an update or b) pirated the software. I have the exact same problem as you, but sadly my current install is quite unstable. Hopefully 10.5.3 will come out soon as I really don’t want to do a clean install and then have to set up all my software, VMware, etc…all over again.

Superb job on this article. Thanks for the info. Everyone who reads this should join the protest - and those of you still using Bell services (any of them - long distance, cell, satalite tv, internet, etc) should switch to a competitors service right away. I've switched all mine over now. All that's left is basic phone line service. Big greedy corps like Bell only understand money, so its best to hit them were it counts: their bottom line.

@TooTall
A WiFi network is not utilizing the Rogers cellular network in any way shape or form, so it has nothing to do with Rogers and Rogers can't charge you for it. WiFi is simply someone's wireless internet connection like one might have at home to use with their laptop. It might also be wireless internet offered by a coffee shop for customers. If you have your own wireless internet connection at home, it won't cost you a cent to use your iPhone on it. Likewise for public free WiFi networks.

Of course, not every WiFi network is open or free. Your first clue will be if the network asks you for a password when you try to connect to it. Some open WiFi networks are offered as a pay-for service. With those, you'll be able to connect without a password, but the second you try to surf the web, you will be taken to a web page which will either ask for your credit card number or for you to enter a username and password if you have a pre-arranged paid subscription.

In no case will you ever be charged for using WiFi without your express permission or knowledge since there's no way for them to know who to charge.

I'm still not clear about the WiFi.

When you unlock your iphone is the wifi free when you do not have a data plan.

or are you charged as if you were using the internet on your other phones.
Cause i don't want a nice surprise come time my next phone bill. I'm with Fido by the way which is owned by Rogers
